Odoo 18: key takeaways from the new release
Odoo unveiled version 18 at Odoo Experience in Brussels. More than a routine update, this release confirms a direction: moving from an "SMB-friendly" ERP into a true enterprise platform capable of handling complex organizations.
Here's what we found most impactful for our clients.
Predictive AI enters the building
Probably the most structural addition. Odoo 18 introduces AI-powered forecasting across several modules:
- CRM: automatic lead scoring based on conversion history. Your sales team knows where to focus.
- Inventory: demand prediction, stock optimization, automatic anomaly detection (incoming stockout, overstock).
- Manufacturing: production plan adjustments based on forecasts.
These features ship without external configuration: no need to integrate a homemade ML model — Odoo handles it. For an SMB, this is a major qualitative jump — predictive tooling was previously reserved for large groups with dedicated data teams.
Dispatch Management: logistics levels up
The new Dispatch Management System lets you organize delivery rounds directly in Odoo, whether you use your own fleet or a third-party carrier. It's a clear answer to a historic gap: managing the last leg of the supply chain.
For e-tailers and local distributors, this is a real shift.
Lot and serial number traceability
Odoo 18 introduces cross-company lot and serial traceability, plus valuation by lot and serial. Critical for regulated industries (food, pharma, medical devices) or anyone running after-sales with potential recalls.
Commission module
A dedicated commission management module ships, allowing:
- Setting individual or team-level targets
- Automatic compensation projection based on performance
- Real-time view of target achievement
End of shared month-end Excel files.
Mobile redesign
The mobile app was reworked. The goal: enable field teams (sales, drivers, in-store operators) to handle their tasks without touching a desktop. Inventory, sales, product publishing — all directly from mobile.
Big change for retail SMBs, foodservice, or home services.
Industry Starter Packs
Odoo continues to enrich its ready-made vertical packs. Version 18 adds: Bakery, Food Truck, Cleaning Service, Electrician, Marketing Agency, Outdoor Activities, and more.
The point: kick off a project in days rather than months, with a config already tailored to the trade.
International compliance
Odoo 18 now supports 600+ localization tasks across 69 countries. For exporting SMBs and multi-entity groups, this is less and less of a question.
Our take
Odoo 18 marks a clear maturation of the platform. AI and advanced logistics features were gaps regularly flagged by buyers comparing Odoo to SAP or Microsoft Dynamics. Most of those criticisms fall with this version.
For existing clients on Odoo 16 or 17, the migration is worth it — especially if you operate in logistics, retail, or have complex sales cycles.
